Welcome to the wonderful world of Helikopter Design, A Philadelphia web design studio run by resident creative James Martin. I build hand-crafted websites using all flavors of HTML, CSS, JQuery, MySql, PHP and content management systems like Textpattern and Wordpress. My tools of the trade include Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver. What does this mean for the layperson? Not a damn thing! What you do need to know is that I LOVE what I do. This is not a “job” for me, it’s a passion. The devotion for all things web-related enable me to keep up to date on the latest trends and developments, passing my knowledge on to you, the client.

Whether you are interested in an e-commerce solution, a template for your blog, a site redesign, a non-profit website, or just looking to build an online identity, I can help. I create standards compliant websites where the objective is “beauty meets practicality”. The most important thing is having a satisfying end-user experience. Visual “bells and whistles” are nice, but if your content is not easily navigable, what’s the point? I won’t bore or confuse you with technical mumbo-jumbo. I’ll communicate clearly with you in a language you can understand. Plus I’m a nice, friendly guy as well!

A little personal info: I’m a self-taught designer who’s been working with front-end development for about 3 years. When I’m not doing this, I love to read tons of books and magazines (no topic too arcane!), do meditation, and listen to everything from Fugazi to Thelonious Monk. I also love the Philadelphia Flyers, Glasgow Celtic F.C. and hanging out in the East Falls section of Philadelphia with my girlfriend Lisa and my beloved (and sometimes pain-in-the-ass) Boston terrier, Trevor.

Web Design Trends for 2010

November 30th, 2009

If we had Steve Ballmer introducing this article, the pleasantly plump Microsoft CEO would be stalking the stage, sweating and exclaiming “Typography!, Typography!, Typography!, Typography!”. That’s how much we think typographic implementation will be the biggest trend in web design for 2010. We also think minimalism, print world influence, importance of mobile device optimization, and rising usage of HTML5 and CSS3 techniques will be major players on the design front for 2010.
